DIY Garage Floor Epoxy: How We Transformed Our Dingy Garage for Under $600

When we moved into this house, every single inch needed attention—including the smelly, moldy, oil-stained garage floor. While our renovation list was long and daunting, I hit my limit after too many mornings walking through this dingy, unhappy space. The garage floor needed a glow-up.

Enter: Operation Garage Floor Epoxy.

We bought this house sight unseen, knowing there’d be quirks we didn’t love, but nothing that felt like a dealbreaker. One thing I really wished for? A mudroom. Since this house didn’t have one, I decided the garage had to step up. With a little creativity (and elbow grease), it became both a mudroom alternative and a fresh, functional space.

Why We Chose to DIY Our Garage Floor Epoxy

I looked into professional garage epoxy services—my sister had hers done for a cool $5,000 (ouch). With an entire house to remodel and a DIY spirit to match, we decided to take on the project ourselves.

  • ✔️ Best case: It looked fabulous.
  • ✔️ Worst case: It had to be better than what we started with.

Spoiler alert: it turned out way better than we imagined. Two years later, it’s still holding up beautifully.

Step-by-Step: How We Epoxied Our Garage Floor

  1. Clear & Power Wash
Clear everything out of your garage.
Power wash the concrete to remove grime and oils.
    Let the floor dry completely.
  2. Repair Concrete (If Needed)
If your concrete has spalling, repair with Quikrete Fast Setting Concrete Mix.
  3. Etch the Concrete
Use the etching solution included in the kit.
Apply in sections and scrub thoroughly.
  4. Apply Epoxy
Mix the pouch (Rust-Oleum’s no-mess burst bag is genius).
Pour into a tray and roll on like paint.
  5. Cure & Enjoy
Wait 1–3 days before parking cars on it.

Our Honest Review: Rust-Oleum Rocksolid Polycuramine

Two years later, this garage floor still looks amazing. Between Ohio winters, road salt, and the occasional hammer drop (oops), it’s held up beautifully.
